Elon Musk’s Starlink got govt nod in India for satcom business

New Delhi, 11 May 2025: Elon Musk’s Starlink has finally received the nod from the Indian government to launch its satellite internet services. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to Starlink, allowing it to operate under strict national security guidelines.

Starlink, a division of Musk’s aerospace firm SpaceX, provides broadband internet via a group of over 7,000 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, a number expected to exceed 40,000 in the coming years. Unlike traditional geostationary satellites, LEO satellites orbit closer to Earth, reducing latency and enabling high-speed internet access even in remote areas.

The approval comes after months of discussion, with Starlink agreeing to 29 security conditions, including real-time terminal tracking, mandatory local data processing, legal interception capabilities, and localization of at least 20% of its ground infrastructure within the first few years of operation.

While most conditions were accepted, controversial proposals such as mandatory Indian majority shareholding and restrictions on terminal use near international borders were dropped due to conflicts with existing telecom and FDI regulations.

With this regulatory breakthrough, Starlink is ready to become the first provider of mobile satellite internet services in India under the GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite) license. This could be a game-changer for emergency response scenarios and users in transit across remote terrains.

As for pricing, industry reports suggest that monthly subscription costs could range between ₹3,000 and ₹7,000, depending on the internet speed choosen and location. Additionally, the one-time cost for Starlink setup, including a satellite dish and Wi-Fi router, is expected to cost between ₹20,000 and ₹35,000. Accoding to the Indian retail market, Starlink prices are higher than conventional broadband rates in India.
