Centre Approves New Government Medical College at ESI Hospital in Asansol
Kolkata, 6 June 2025: To boost medical education and healthcare infrastructure in West Bengal, the central government has approved the idea of a new government medical college and hospital within the premises of the ESI Hospital in Asansol. State law minister Moloy Ghatak confirmed this development project of the Medical college, who represents the Asansol North Assembly constituency, where the Asansol ESI hospital is located.
The proposal was recently cleared by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Board in New Delhi. The exact timeline for the project’s completion is yet to be announced. But work is expected to begin within the next month, according to ESI Hospital Superintendent Dr. Atanu Bhadra.
The Government wants to modernize healthcare services at ESI hospitals across the state. In recent times, Asansol city has witnessed several healthcare infrastructure improvements, including the establishment of a nursing school offering BSc degrees, an ICU, SNCU, dialysis facilities, and a dental care unit.
A few years ago, Mr Ghatak had proposed to the Union labour ministry the idea of setting up a medical college on the ESI Hospital campus, citing the availability of sufficient land.
The state government has also completed construction of the nursing college building at a cost of Rs 8 crore. The college offers 50 seats annually for students pursuing a BSc in nursing.
