RBI to issue ₹20 denomination Bank notes featuring Governor Sanjay Malhotra’s Signature
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced of new ₹20 denomination banknotes under the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series with the signature of the recently appointed RBI Governor, Sanjay Malhotra.
This update follows the standard protocol of issuing currency notes with the new governor’s signature and does not affect the validity of existing notes.

The design and security features of the new ₹20 notes will remain same with those currently in circulation. The notes measure 63 mm x 129 mm and have a base colour of greenish-yellow. The reverse side continues to showcase the Ellora Caves, reflecting India’s rich cultural heritage. Security features include a windowed security thread with inscriptions ‘भारत’ and ‘RBI’, a watermark of Mahatma Gandhi, and micro-lettering.
Sanjay Malhotra assumed the role of the 26th Governor of the RBI on December 11, 2024, succeeding Shaktikanta Das. His appointment marks a continuation of the RBI’s commitment to maintaining the integrity and stability of India’s banking & financial system.
The RBI has clarified that all ₹20 banknotes issued in the past will continue to be legal tender. The introduction of notes with the new governor’s signature is a routine administrative procedure and does not necessitate any action from the public regarding existing currency.
For majority of the citizens this will effect nothing to them.
